Silence Disappears

Silence Disappears

A student sits at a desk, having just been given time to read a book that's due to have a test given on it in a day or two. Books flop open to hit desks and the rustle of pages begins.

Expecting either silence or the usual noise, this student sits happily in the middle of the fourth row beginning chapter 6 of "The Scarlet Letter" for the second time. The student reads the first paragraph without event. However, when the second is begun, the intercom buzzes, calling for another student to come up to the office. This buzzed student goes to leave and every noise is heard. The sneakers as they skid across the carpet. The jeans as they rub together. The heavy book that is let fall to the old desk which squeaks under the impact. The smacking of the gum that isn't allowed. The tap of shoes on the floor. Pen scratching on paper. Paper torn from pag. More footsteps. The creak of a door as it opens. Footsteps in the hallway. It goes on and on.

The door won't fully close, so more sounds creep in. The video playing next door allows itself to be heard. The class down the hall is singing. Somewhere in the hall two teachers are arguing over the best brand of pantyhose and the continued rustle of pages and smacks of gum and tiny whispers across the way abound and drown out sense and reason.

But suddenly, the teacher stans and plods along to the lectren and announces that reading time is over. Books slam shut and backpacks unzip. Mouths shoot off words and again there's usual noise. But, there's also the unnerving smell of popcorn drenched in butter that's eminating from the hall.
