Alexis
Alexis

For the first day in a long while, the sun that beat down upon him did not feel repulsively hot. There was a light breeze that cooled the warmth just before it hit his skin. He was careful to add a bit more sunscreen to his face, as he knew from experience that this was how people got sun poisoning. When the sun's rays did not feel as hot, people thought it would not burn them. Just because something isn't hot, doesn't mean it won't burn you. At that thought, images flooded his mind. Images of the one who had burned him, and scarred him for life.

She had said her name was Alexis. He knew now that it had not been, but he wasn't aware of what her real name was. She was quite plain looking, even sickly, and he now knew why. She had light brown hair that fell in uncontrolled waves almost to the middle of her back. She had eyes that faded into the background. He didn't even remember what color they were. Her lips were thin, a dark, but still pale, pink color. She didn't have many curves, and seemed very underweight. Had she stood up straight, she might have been five and a half feet tall, but she stood sort of hunched over giving her the appearance of an even five feet. He wished he hadn't given her a second glance. He wished he hadn't given her a first.

He wouldn't have said anything to her, but she had approached him with promises of a good time. Stupid him for not realizing that she meant sex and drugs. But he had agreed to take her up on her offer unknowing of what lay ahead of him. He was to meet her that night at a local teen's hangout. That made him feel safe. A nice place where he could be with people his own age who wouldn't scream. He could blend in. And, if anything happened, someone else would be around. How stupid he had been.

When he first arrived, she had been the first thing he noticed. It was probably the fact that her red satin slipdress hid almost nothing. She had walked up to him and handed him a drink. The place was crowded, and he soon became very warm. He downed the soda, unknowing of the Pentothal in it, then ordered another. He never got to drink it. He passed out shortly before it arrived.

When he awoke, he was in a bed, and "Alexis" was all over him. He couldn't get his thoughts stright, and just went along with what she was doing. It was, in a sense, rape. But he didn't realize it at the time, and now, "Alexis" was nowhere to be found. The next morning, he found himself in his hotel room, a monsterous headache forming in his head. He didn't know how he had gotten back there, and didn't remember what had happened until he noticed a note on the pillow next to him. The words sickened him.

    Dearest Jordan,
I just wanted to inform you that I have AIDS, and now,
you probably will too. By the way, my name isn't Alexis.
    Pass it on.

The first person he had told was his mother. He somewhat regretted that as she had gotten extremely emotional, and had slapped him, hard. He remembered the bruise that he had to have covered up for the next ten performances or so, as well as his mother's constant apologies.

He had gone to the doctor the next day to be tested. The results came back negative. He hadn't let that get his hopes up though. He had gone back a few months later, only to find that he was indeed HIV positive. He knew it could be years until he actually had AIDS, but something inside him told him that it would hit soon, and it would hit hard.

And now he stood on a stage singing "MMMBop" with his brothers Isaac, and Zachary. He pounded on his keyboards, and sang into the microphone, his lips almost touching it, "In an mmmbop, they're gone. In an mmmbop, they're not there. In an mmmbop, they're gone. In an mmmbop, they're not there, and until you lose your hair, oh, but you don't care, yeah!"

Those lyrics applied to him now. They also applied to "Alexis". He hated the fact that they could be grouped together in any way. He hated that he hadn't been careful.

And the sun passed beneath the clouds, the calm before the relentless storm. He only wished that there had been something that he could have done to protect himself from the burning fire that was "Alexis".
