Pleading Of The First
Pleading Of The First

"Taylor, do not use that sort of language in this house."

"But, Mom, the First Amendment guarantees me free speech. That includes offensive, and obnoxious language. It would be unlawful to punish me for that."

Taylor's mother, Diana, flared her nostrils, but did not speak. Taylor grinned just a tiny bit, and made his way outdoors. He could now go to the "damn" football game, and he could meet up with Crystal.

"Come on Taylor. Get dressed. I don't want us to be late for church on account of you any more."

"But, Mom, the First Amendment guarantees me freedom of religion. That means you can't force me to attend church if I don't want to."

Diana bit her lip, but did not speak. Taylor grinned just a bit as everyone else piled into the van to head to church. Now, Crystal could come over.

"Taylor, you're annoying me. Please quit wearing those stupid sunglasses in the house."

"But, Mom, the First Amendment guarantees me the right of peaceful protest. I'm merely protesting sixty watt light bulbs, and that's the only kind in this house."

Diana clenched her fists, but did not speak. Taylor grinned just a bit as he walked back to his room. He only wore the glasses to hide the dark circles underneath his eyes, the only direct result of his long nights with Crystal, besides the immense pleasure. That one night on the football field, and then again down by the river. Such fun, and it had only begun. Or so he believed.

"Mom, why do they have the right to publish that? Huh? Tell me that."

"But, Taylor, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press. You were already a public figure, and you did that in a public place. As long as they told the truth, it isn't libel, so you'll have no case in court. Now, is it the truth?"

Taylor flared his nostrils, bit his lip, and clenched his fists, but he didn't speak. Diana grinned just a bit as she walked out of the room. He had finally gotten the other side of the Amendment.

His career was completely gone, faded to a miniscule few fans from the millions he and his brothers had once enjoyed. He had enjoyed a few too many of them after Crystal left him. Too bad he hadn't realized why. Crystal was long gone, as was his first child because Crystal had AIDS. He was now associated with a disease that spread like wildfire, and he wasn't proud of it.

If he hadn't been in a public place, it would have amounted to a good lawsuit. But, he had been, and no court, not District, not Appeals, and not Supreme took his side. He was merely a teenager fulfilling his fantasies, and she had been all too willing, as had the others, all because of who he was.

Jordan Taylor Hanson glanced around, taking a final glimpse of the pristine hospital room that he was practically encased in. He closed his eyes, and took his last breath. He let it out, and thought his last thought. "Why doesn't the First Amendment save me now?"
