Summertime/Grow Let me explain this one a little for those of you who are unfamiliar with these ancient Japanese poetic art forms. In the days that these were most popular, Japan's Samurai were well-versed and though they were trained killers, they must be able to appreciate nature as well. When not off killing for their country and honor, they were drinking tea and writing haiku's for the girl's whom they were courting. The samurai would write the haiku and send it to his love and she would send her response in the form of a tanka. Haikus and tankas are both known for their form (haiku: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables; tanka: 5 syllables, 6 syllables, 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 7 syllables)

Summertime: a haiku

Be emit remmus
And all the children laughing;
What wonderful light.

Grow: a tanka

What wild orchid
Does sit upon my sill?
Sun with it smiles,
As cool water with it grows:
Happiness is abounding.
