Author's Note: This piece came about as part of a writing exercise. My writing class was told to come up with a list of random items. So, I did.
She turned the cap on her Arizona Green Tea, tossed it to the floor and chugged down enough to quench the thirst the day's warmth had caused. She turned on the television and allowed herself to absorb the cathode rays after pressing the play button on her answering machine. "Lily Ana Muertos, you have no new messages."
Lily Ana sighed and settled into the couch. After a moment, she felt herself drifting off to sleep. She was stuck between the world of dreams and reality when a thought squirmed into her head. "Today is the day, Lily Ana. Time to find your destiny."
With another sigh, she resigned herself to the mental conversation. "Joseph, that was telepathetic. So, what does this destiny thing involve?"
"Look in the case I gave you that you never bothered to open. Roll 'em. Goodbye for now!"
Standing up, she made her way to the other side of the room, reminding herself to pick up the orange peels she'd thrown there earlier. Sh came to the aforementioned box, opened it and was greeted with the sight of two silver cubes dotted with onyx stones to form a pair of expensive-looking dice. Remembering Joseph's words, "Roll 'em," she clasped the dice in her hand, relishing the cool feel for a moment before dropping them to the floor with a shake of her hand.
Where they fell, the carpet rippled and became a vast expanse of deep, blue sea. Lily Ana balanced on top of the water and began walking to an island about ten yards away. While walking, she pulled a pair of sunglasses from her pocket and slid them on.
Suddenly, a fish jumped out of the water in front of her, a green fish. She took a few steps to the right to avoid it. She finally stepped onto the sand of the island and happened across a piece of paper in plain view. Upon closer examination, she found it to be a note from Joseph. "Finally. This took you long enough. I'll meet you tonight... in your dreams. - Joseph"
All of a sudden, a doorknob appeared in front of her, seeming to float in mid-air. Knowing well her purpose, she turned the knob and pushed. She sheilded her eyes when a bright light shone through the crack in the door. She pushed through further and found herself back in her living room; staring at a plush green fish that was now on the floor in front of her.
Lily Ana sat on the couch again and was soon fast asleep. Her dreams brought her back to that paradise she was in only moments earlier and to Joseph, the pain that he liked to be and the "friend" that he was.
