He awoke to light interrupting the darkness that he had been
enjoying immensely. As he wrenched his eyes open, he realized that his mother
has just entered the room and seemed to be looking around frantically for
something. He rubbed his eyes a bit and croaked out with his tired voice, "Mom?
Whatcha lookin' for?"
His frazzled mother threw her hands up in surprise and frustration. "Oh, did
I wake you Taylor? Sorry. Um, where are Zac's CD's?"
A lock of hair fell in front of Taylor's eyes as his head slumped forward a
bit. He pushed it back and answered, "They should be down in the garage. Why?
Where is Zac anyway?"
Diana Hanson, apparantly even more flustered than she seemed, looked as
though she was rhythmically dancing between the door and her second eldest son.
She brought her hands up to her hair and took a deep breath. She quickly
explained the situation to Taylor as she gathered up some of the things Zac had
said he wanted.
Once she was finished, she walked over to Taylor and placed a hand on his
forehead. "You feeling okay?"
Taylor smoothed his hair back with one hand. "It's strange. All of our
girlfriends have something wrong with them. Melyssa is sick. Kaylin is having
problems with her pregnancy. Saralynn is pregnant and about to get an abor..."
His mother dropped everything from her arms. "She what!?"
Taylor's jaw quivered for a moment before he got the courage to speak anew.
"Saralynn is pregnant. However, because she feels that she can't take care of the
child and doesn't think that the way the world is today is a good place for very
young children to be brought up in, she's going to have an abortion and I'm
paying for it."
He gulped as his mother leaned down to gather up the dropped items. "Taylor,
if this is your choice with her, I'll go along with it, but your father... You
have to tell him in the morning. If you don't, I'll have to and you'll get let
grief if you tell him rather than have him find out."
Taylor jumped to his feet and wrapped his mother in a bear hug. "Thank, Mom.
It won't happen again."
His mother smiled. "How 'bout just not soon. I want lots of grandbabies and
Saralynn seems like a fine girl."
Taylor sat back down on the bed and grinned as his mother retreated. Yet,
butterflies began to make themselves known in his stomach as he thought about
what the morning would bring.
After a few hours of waiting, Zachary Hanson was ready to kill someone,
anyone to know something other than, "The doctor will be with you shortly." With
lines like that coming from the overweight and overly snotty nurse, he felt like
a patient rather than a concerned boyfriend.
He'd already eaten half of his box of Twinkies more as something to do than
something to snack on. Therefore, he was running a bit on the hyper side and
couldn't find anything to hold his attention except his CD player, but he
couldn't decide which CD he wanted to listen to. He wanted something happy and
lively to pull him from his thoughts of despair, but was afraid that might earn
him a trip to the psychiatric ward. He could listen to something moody and
somber to bring down his level of hyperactivity, but he feared that might make
him worry about Melyssa even more and that seemed almost impossible with how
much worry he was filled with at the moment.
Shaking his head, Zac threw something rather neutral into his CD player,
Athenaeum, let it start playing and began the motions of settling down for a
little while with his pillow supporting his CD player and his blanket keeping
his feet warm as his shoes had been abandoned a while ago in lieu of comfort.
After a few moments, he was beginning to calm down and drift off. It was at
that moment that he heard a man say from behind him over the din of his music,
"Um, Melyssa Smith.. Who here wanted to know information about her?"
Zac practically jumped to his feet sending his CD player flying across the
waiting room floor spilling its batteries in the process. He barely gave it a
glance as he rushed up to this man who he identified as a doctor by his white
coat and clipboard. "How is she?!"
The doctor who had not given his name and was not wearing any identification
chuckled a bit. "She'll be just fine. She should be headed home in a day or two.
It was just another seizure."
Zac lightly balled his left hand into a fist. "What was this seizure from?"
The doctor flipped through the pages of information that he kept on his
clipboard and stopped on a page about midway back. "She has an ear infection in
each ear. Her internal temperature rose to one hundred and six degrees and she
began to have a seizure. This was most likely caused by the fact that her immune
system has been down lately."
Zac unballed his fist. "Why has her immune system been down?"
"Her disease has been hitting her hard lately."
Zac breathed a sigh of relief and worry. "Thanks, doc."
The doctor nodded and walked off, leaving Zac to gather the parts of his CD
player and once again try to settle down for some rest, figuring that Melyssa
was probably sleeping and didn't want to be disturbed, although Zac would
definitely see her in the morning.
Isaac watched as the woman in front of him sewed thread into a pattern that
seemed more intricate than a spider's web. He smiled as she wove together two
threads, blue and green in color, to form a delicate rose of sorts. This
embroidery was beautiful. Then, he realized that he did not know this woman's
name though he had spent more than the last three hours in her company.
Embarassed, he spoke quietly, "Uh, here's a new topic. What's your name?"
The woman laughed. "I'm Julia. And you are?"
He eyed her cautiously for a moment, wondering if she was just being polite
or if she really had no idea who he was. "I'm Isaac."
Julia nodded as she continued her embroidery. "Cool."
Isaac laughed at this. "You're crazy. But, you're still cool to be around."
Julia smiled and shook her head as she chuckled under her breath. "Thanks."
"You're welcome."
