For You To Say You Care

For You To Say You Care

Taylor held Saralynn close and enjoyed the bit of breeze coming into the room. Saralynn was asleep on his lap, having worn herself out crying. He couldn't bring himself to let her go now, after all that he had put her through.

Truly, the thought of having to say good-bye to her for whatever reason had never entered his mind as he had taken for granted that she would always be there for him. But, he decided, it was his turn now. He would be the one to take care of her and that would mean completely giving up drugs, secretive looks towards other girls and it would mean taking responsibility for what he had done and what he was about to do.

He made a mental appointment to tell his parents that night about what was going on.

"Mom, is she going to be alright?

Zachary sat next to his mother, not realizing that his oldest brother was there, and asked yet again what would become of his love. Once again, his mother was unsure. "Zachary, I can't tell you. I'm no doctor. The most I can do is comfort anyone who needs comforting. However, you look like you need some hot chocolate. Want me to get you some with marshmallows?"

His heart sank. He didn't think he'd ever receive the answer he was looking for. All he wanted was for her to be okay. "Actually, Mom, maybe some coffee. I don't feel like having anything really sweet."

"Coffee? My, you're growing up. Cream and sugar?"

Zac shook his head. "Black is fine."

As his mother walked off, he pushed his hair back from his face and once more picked up the book he'd been trying to read. After only a moment, he threw the book down in frustration. He didn't know what to do here. He might as well be at home, getting some sleep, but Melyssa was here and he had the strange feeling that she would need him soon. Possibly, very soon.

Isaac felt strangely relieved that his mother was there. Once he'd told her about the ordeal that had brought him here, he'd felt himself go from rigid to relaxed. Seemingly, having told someone, especially his mother, what he was going through, helped to bring him out of the lapse in rationality that he was having.

He would have tried talking to his brother, but he could tell that Zac was off somewhere else, possibly with Melyssa in his mind. There was nothing he could really do at the moment except to follow his mother down to the cafeteria and get a cup of coffee of his own, making a mental note not to get his black. Sugar was fine for him at the time of the day.

Chiding himself for thinking of sugar, Isaac's mind wandered to Taylor. What was he doing? Could he be awake by now, possibly wondering where everyone had gone? Did his father know yet all that had happened? And possibly most importantly at the moment, do hospital cafeterias have good coffee?

When Taylor returned home that evening, his mother and Zachary had just left. Taylor had fallen asleep at Saralynn's house and hadn't woken up until Saralynn got up to get changed for bed. He'd explained his plan to her while she was brushing her teeth. She hadn't taken to the news too well, but seeing as how Taylor planned to marry her, she seemed to know it would be a good thing in the end.

After a while of bantering back and forth about exactly how much he should tell his parents, they broached the subject about whether she would tell her mother and if so, when. They still hadn't reached a decision and it was likely that they wouldn't discuss it again for a while. They had other things to prepare for.

Zachary had skimmed through every magazine in the waiting room that he was in at the hospital several times and had thrown his book down on a chair several more. When he'd realized that it was his brother there at the hospital, he hadn't thought to try to talk to him for a while, even though his girlfriend, well, wife, was in relatively the same position.

Diana Hanson had mentioned to Zac several times that she could bring him home. He'd adamantly refused, but had asked her to bring him a few things from home that he thought he might need. A few things on his list were his favorite blanket, favorite pillow, his CD player, all of his CDs, extra batteries and a box of Twinkies in case he decided that he did want some sugar after all.

When his mother finally arrived back at the hospital, she had also brought with her some sensible things like toiletries and a change of clothing, as well as Zac's schoolbooks and a notebook with some colored pencils. He thanked his mother and set about pacing back and forth in the waiting room, wondering when any news would arrive about his love.

Isaac had managed to find a good companion in the hospital cafeteria. A woman of about 25 with sparkling green eyes had sat down at the only available table just before he reached it. He'd asked to sit with her and the green-eyed woman had readily agreed. They had talked about a lot of things. Music and medicine had been the two main topics, though they had touched on politics, geography and candy-making. They were currently talking about leukemia, the disease that this interesting green-eyed, formerly brown-haired woman had been afflicted with only a few years ago.

Somehow in all of that, a friendship that could last a night was made and strengthened to the point of lasting forever, however long that would be for the two.
